The Magic of Photography (and Photoshop)

A friend sent along a link to this story at urlesque.com touting a web site with side-by-side comparisons of the official photographs of fast food menu items alongside their rather depressing real-world counterparts. The Platonic Ideal has never seemed so far away.... Meet the *real* Egg McMuffin, after the jump.

Looks like the real world version doesn't come with a halo.

The secret is vanilla Crisco

I will only add that when I worked in a restaurant, one of my odd jobs was to refresh the dessert tray that sat out in the lobby to tempt guests. We used real desserts, but replaced ephemera like ice cream with big scoops of vanilla Crisco (the vanilla version looked more authentic, less like lard). We then coated all the desserts in clear industrial shellac. My boss determined that people thought shiny things tasted better, perhaps the same train of thought that brings us the holy Egg McMuffin.
