All you beautiful little fools, let's have a mid-week party, shall we? In the spirit of good times, I'll draw your attention to the fact that, this week, what we talk about when we talk about Gatsby has changed. I'm not refering to the upcoming film, which will star Leonardo Dicaprio and Carey Mulligan. No, I'm talking about the video game version of the classic novel! Like ol' James Gatz himself, the game has surfaced from complete obscurity only to become the talk of the town. (According to internet buzz, the game was found at a yard sale.) Unless you've been living under a rock, you've likely seen this little gem already. Surely, your lit nerd or gamer friends have posted a link on facebook! In case you haven't taken a peek yet, play a few rounds here.
Players, like readers (to a degree), assume the position of Nick Carraway. And, just like in real life and modern fiction, if you run into too many butlers with martinis, you're in trouble.

Sadly, my game-playing skills are a bit rusty. That, and, I can't commit to all of this virtual boozing for too long, though I'll likely try again later. In the meantime, in between time, you might have better luck than I, old sport.

An artifact of my time
I am so glad that you posted this. Weirdly, I found this game so compelling because it draws strongly on two separate childhood/teenage experiences that I had: playing Nintendo and reading The Great Gatsby. It seems like everyone I know who is approximately my age read this book in high school (all in the same grade, if they are from North Carolina--either 9th or 11th, because I remember that 12th grade was British and 10th was World Lit) and, of course, played Nintendo, although perhaps not with the enthusiasm that I did. The nostalgia appeal is so strong, and the fact that both of these things make me nostalgic downplays what is really an incongruity; it is weirdly perfect that Gatsby would become an NES game.
